Making sure the air in your house is being properly filtered can go a long way toward improving your indoor air quality.
What Are MERV Ratings?
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) ratings measure a filter’s ability to effectively remove dust from air as it passes through the filter.
MERV ratings range on a scale from 1 to 16; the higher a filter’s MERV rating, the better it is at removing dust particles from the air.
HVAC system filters should do two things: remove dust and other potentially harmful particulates from the air and protect your heating and cooling system so it runs efficiently. The latter part of this statement involves making sure the filters your equipment uses does not impede air flow in any way. And, of course, you’ll want to use filters that have high efficiency ratings and can pick up as many particulates – no matter how small – as possible.
There are many types of filtration products on the market. How do you know which is right for your system?
That’s what we are here for. We want to make sure your HVAC system’s filtration system is working efficiently and maintaining good air quality at the same time.
We also want you to be educated. Too many times consumers simply turn to cheap, easily obtained filters that offer no real benefit. These include:
- One inch filters - One inch filters are typically found in grocery and home improvement stores. When choosing one of these filters you should be careful to read their efficacy measurements; if a filter claims it’s good at catching particles 3 microns in size and above, be wary that most household particles are much smaller than that (see box to the right).
- Electrostatic filters - Electrostatic filters tend to restrict air flow and are difficult to clean. Unclean filters can not only spread allergens throughout a home but cause your HVAC system to run inefficiently
- 4 – 5 inch filters - Four-five inch filters provide good air flow but have difficulty collecting particles less than one micron in size.
What Is A Micron & Why Should I Care?
A micron is a metric measurement used to measure very, very small particulates. One micron is equal to 1/25,400 of an inch.
Microns are important component in determining the efficacy of a filter. Most household pollutants, such as dust particles, are less than one micron in size – but many filters have zero efficacy in collecting particles that small.
